Mathematics

The Mathematics Department at McCulloch Intermediate School and Highland Park Middle School develops confident problem-solvers and critical thinkers through a rigorous, vertically aligned curriculum. Grounded in the TEKS and HPISD Standards, the program provides students with the mathematical knowledge, reasoning skills, and real-world applications needed for success in high school and beyond.

In grades 5 and 6, students build a strong mathematical foundation through courses that emphasize number sense, fractions, decimals, ratios, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and introductory algebraic thinking. Students are encouraged to develop problem-solving strategies, mathematical communication skills, and confidence as learners while exploring concepts through both traditional and real-world applications. Accelerated and TAG pathways provide additional opportunities for advanced learners.

In grades 7 and 8, students deepen their understanding of algebraic reasoning, proportional relationships, geometry, statistics, probability, and financial literacy. Students may pursue advanced coursework through accelerated and TAG pathways, with opportunities to earn high school credit in Algebra I and Geometry. Through increasingly rigorous coursework, students strengthen their analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities while preparing for the challenges of high school mathematics and future academic success.
