Cross Country

Cross Country (XC) is a distance running sport. Our meets consist of a 2-mile trail running course usually on Saturdays (some are not). Our average mileage will be 10 - 12 miles a week for 7th graders and 15 miles a week for 8th graders. The first day of school we will talk about the upcoming season then pass out information concerning cross country. Practice will begin the second day of school with runners attempting to run 1.5 miles without stopping. Runners will not be able to participate in a meet until they can complete two miles without stopping. PLEASE make sure you have your online paperwork filled out and a physical completed by a physician using the UIL forms below. Practices for 7th graders are from 7:15 to 8 a.m. in the morning. They will then shower and eat breakfast. 8th graders will practice from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. The three most important requests are:

Tennis

Tennis Program Mission: To teach, develop, and foster a winning tennis tradition on and off the court that aligns with excellence established at HPHS Tennis Program and the commitment to get student athletes ready to contribute at the next level on day one.

Tennis Practice

The focus will be on learning doubles play, strategy, fitness, and the commitment to what it takes to win state championships. With hard work, for those students who desire to play at HPHS, the transition will be seamless for those who make the team. This streamlined approach is by design to maximize student athlete success at a state championship program. Students will be given the blue print for success, as well as the guidance to follow it, and the rest is up to the hard work and dedication of the athlete.

Team Composition/Information

Both 7th and 8th Grade boys and girls compete together on the tennis team.
No specific uniform is required for practice. Proper tennis attire is required.
There is a specific uniform for matches against other schools.
All HPMS tennis matches will be in the Spring.

Track and Field

Each athlete will try out for each meet in a desired event/s. We will take the top 3 athletes for each event (Track and Field). The Tuesdays prior to each Thursday meet, we will post the "qualifiers" for the upcoming meet in the locker room. Every week, athletes will be involved in time trials, jump offs, etc., to qualify for each meet.

Each athlete can be entered into a total of 5 events. (3 running and 2 field; or 3 field and 2 running). Running events take precedence over field events during the track meet. For example, an athlete may be running the 300m. hurdles and also participating in the triple jump. If the events are scheduled at the same time, the athlete will check-in at the triple jump and then run his race and return to jump.
