Keyboarding
Course Description
KEYBOARDING
“Keyboarding is now one of the fundamental life skills for today’s technological age; thus, it is important for all students. Keyboarding can best be described as (1) a computer literacy tool, (2) a communication tool, and (3) a productivity tool.” (Keyboarding Strategies Guide, NBEA, Pg. 1)
During the first two six weeks of the semester the course is designed to develop proper touch keyboarding skills. During the last six weeks of the semester the students will complete a keyboarding simulation. Essentially, the student will act as a word processing assistant to a fake company. They will type business documents, e-mails, memos, announcements and reports. Students will use a program on keyboardingonline.com to improve and reinforce their keyboarding skills. The goal of the class is to stop the students from "hunting and pecking" and teach them the proper way to type.
While typing the students will receive grades based on the following:
• Completed Keyboarding Online lessons
• Timed writings. The determined grade will be a combination of the students GWAM (gross words a minute) and the number of errors.
• Typing Technique Assessment. The assessment configures a grade based on the following factors: eyes, fingers, posture and stroking of the keys.
• Journal. The students will spend the first 10-15 minutes of class writing an answer to a selected journal question.
