Medal of Honor recipient Gary Beikirch spoke to HPMS eighth-graders about his life's experiences and lessons he has learned during his visit Oct. 12. Sgt. Beikirch received his Medal of Honor for his actions in Vietnam in 1970. Upon retiring from the military, he taught seventh-grade history and then became a middle school counselor.
He recently retired after 33 years in education. The eighth-graders heard Sgt. Beikirch's stories of his time in Vietnam and the struggles he faced when he returned. He also described how he overcame his hardships to rejoin society. One of the most important messages he told the Raiders was the difference between a successful life and a significant life. He challenged the students to think of their life and how they could make a significant impact on the lives of others.
