Students will produce four writing assessments as Targeted Writing Assessments (TWA) to demonstrate their understanding of mechanics, grammar, and usage skills emphasized during the current grading period. They will also complete other types of writing in various modes and/or genres.
Seventh Grade English (Language Arts)
Seventh grade English consists of a study of writing, research, and vocabulary as well as an emphasis on analyzing the elements of short stories, poetry, and mythology. The students will read selections from their literature textbook but will also be expected to purchase several books during the year. Students are encouraged to think critically and analytically in their writing and in their discussions about literature. Students will take STAAR Writing in March and STAAR Reading in April.

Eighth Grade English (Language Arts)
In the eighth grade English course, students study literature, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and research. They will write for various purposes and in many genres, using critical and analytical thinking in their writing about and discussions of short stories, drama, poetry, nonfiction works, and novels. The students will read selections from their literature textbook but will also be expected to purchase several required books during the year. Students will take STAAR Reading and must pass this state assessment in order to be promoted to the ninth grade.
