Exclusions from School

It is the goal of Highland Park Independent School District to provide an environment that is conducive to learning for all students and staff. Some communicable diseases or conditions may warrant exclusion from school to avoid exposing other students. If your student exhibits any of the following symptoms, please keep your student home until the child is free of the symptoms and has been satisfactorily treated.

  • Temperature of 100 degrees or above
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Persistent cough
  • Rash
  • Open, itchy or draining lesions
  • Red, itchy, draining eyes
  • Lice
  • Untreated scabies
  • Suffering from a reportable disease, as defined by the Texas Board of Health
  • Undiagnosed scaly patches on the body or scalp
  • Your child must be free of vomiting, diarrhea and fever (without the need for medication to reduce these symptoms) for 24 hours before returning to school unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise. Also, newly prescribed antibiotics must be taken for 24 hours before returning to school. Please present a copy of your doctor's note with return-to-school instructions upon return.
Communicable Diseases
In accordance with the Texas Department of State Health Services, a school can exclude a student from attendance who is suspected of having a communicable disease.  Any child excluded for reason of communicable disease may be readmitted when: free of symptoms, has been satisfactorily treated, or submits a signed physician's statement that he/she is not contagious as determined by the health authority.
